A brief history

The Department of Journalism began in the year 1996 offering Journalism and Mass communication as core subjects to the undergraduate students.

Present Faculty:

Dr. Sukanya Malloli B.Sc., M.A., MCJ., LL.B., Ph.D. was entirely In charge of the Department. Under her impeccable guidance and excellent teaching, the department has become a cynosure for native and foreign students to choose this subject along with other optional subjects like Optional English, Functional English and Psychology. From 2014 academic year, Ms. Shruthi C. is managing the Department successfully.

Achievements:

Many students who have completed the course here have come out in flying colours and bagged several awards.

1)        In 2008 – Nasma Abdullah received silver medal by the University of Mysore for securing the highest mark in journalism in final BA examinations.

2)           In 2010- Nithin Chacko was awarded two gold medals by the University of Mysore for receiving highest marks in journalism in the BA examinations.

3)       In 2013- Shashwath Awasthi bagged four gold medals for securing highest marks in journalism in the overall BA examination at the university.

The Media Club run by the Department helps to hone the communication skills of the students. The students get hands on experience in reporting, editing and page make-up by working for the departmental newsletter ‘Philoline’. The annual journalistic meet ‘Aaina’ has completed eleven years successfully. The Department started the Post-graduate course in 2013. St. Philomena’s College is the first under-graduate college to start this PG programme under Mysore University. Besides, it offers courses such as Diploma in Journalism, Certificate course in Journalism and a Short duration course in Photography.

Three Gold Medals in Journalism for  St. Philos

Shashwath Awasti of St. Philomena’s College has bagged three Gold Medals and one Cash Prize for securing highest marks in Journalism in the 2013 examinations of University of Mysore.

Shashwath has also added two more medals and one Cash Prize to his kitty for getting highest marks in Optional English and Hindi.

Future Plan of Action :

The Department is planning to set up a studio for TV programme production.  It is also trying to get many computer systems with latest softwares for newspaper page designing.
