About the Department

The Post-Graduate Department of Studies and Research in Journalism and Mass Communication was established in 2013, at the PG block of St, Philomena`s College (Autonomous) Campus, Bannimantap Road, Mysore. The department is benchmarking high academic standards in its curriculum, has visibly contributed to the burgeoning media industry.

Research is very important and integral aspects in an academic setup as it leads to overall pedagogical progress. Hence, the department has put the effort to bring research nature within it, as part of it, the department was recognized as a research center by the University of Mysore in 2019 and also the department named as Post-Graduate Department of Studies and Research in Journalism and Mass Communication. Since there, the department has been involving in various research activities.

Facilities:  

The department boasts of excellent faculty along with an inspiring and an encouraging environment for graduates to pursue their higher studies in Journalism and Mass Communication.  The Department has a state-of-the-art studio with the latest camera and other compatible technical equipment as per industry needs. We teach practical papers with use of advanced and professional software with high end editing desk.

The department has well-furnished, spacious ICT enabled lecture and seminar halls.  To make course robust, along with classroom lectures, workshops, conferences, guest lectures and industry visits are organize for the benefit and encouragement of the graduates.

 The Programme

The department offers several course as part of MA Programme for 78 credits, spread over 4 semester (20+18+22+18). The whole programme includes Hard core, Soft Core, Skill Enhancement, Open Elective, Ability Enhancement, Interdisciplinary and Self-study course and in the final semester students will have four week mandatory industry internship to enhance their skills.

In each semester department offers theoretical as well as practical course like Photography, Reporting, Editing and Desktop Publication in the first, Digital Audio Production and Technical Writing and Freelancing in second semester, Digital Graphics Design and Introduction to Corporate Communication & Advertising in third semester and Television News Production, Online Journalism, Digital Video Production in fourth semester. Along with this, in the last semester students will have to take up a research project on area of their choice of current importance at a minor level in areas related to Journalism and Mass Communication for 4 credits.

The syllabus

The syllabus is robust with revision of syllabus every two years based on industry need within the ambit of regulations of the University of Mysore. The Board of examination is being formed as per the academic standard where, members are nominated by industry and academics both.

Evaluation:

To maintain the sanctity of evaluation in keeping with the high standards, faculty members only from other P G Department of established Universities of Mysore and allied autonomous PG centers are involved.
