Department Of Mathematics
In order to open the doors to the students from every walk of life irrespective of caste, class, religion and ethnic background,in experiencing the learning process in Mathematics, St. Philomena’s College, the first science college of the Mysore state, during its establishment, incepted Mathematics department in the year 1946. To cater to the ever growing needs of the stakeholders of the poor socio-Economic and academic background, BSc was introduced under the Science stream with a bunch of students, under the headship of Mr. E. N. K. Viswanathan. In the year 1948, to shape up the steady growth of the departmentMr. L. N.Chakravarthi too joined the department of Mathematics. The department witnesses a constant crescendo owing to the indefatigable efforts to the following faculty members to whom we owe our present status. With reverence, we place on record our salutations, sincere gratitude and words of appreciation to the stalwarts of the department of Mathematics.

Prof. Mary P Kurian, the former HOD Mathematics, after assuming the office from Mrs. Maryamma actively involved in reviving the importance of teaching mathematics to the students in a simple way. She gained rich experience as a member of BOE, University of Mysore. This helped her in taking responsibility of becoming
the Chairman, BOE and BOS of the department. As an extension activity, she had delivered talks in AIR for the primary and secondary students. She superannuated on 31st October 2013. Prof. Vidhyadhar Sanjay Nair, the present HOD of the department and the former associate NCC Officer of the college joined the department in the year 1993. The department has so far organized appropriate seminars, special lectures for the students. Department has conducted seminars and paper presentation competitions in the year 2010 March 27th and 2011 April 2nd department has conducted exhibitions of the mathematical models and charts to create awareness among the young minds and to come out of the math phobia. Department organized national seminar On “Recent Adavanced A Methods” in the year 2015.Radio talks were delivered by former HOD, Ms. Mary P Kurian, target listeners who were school teachers on Teaching of Mathematics.
Guest Lectures were arranged by the department for different classes. Department has newly introduced the soft skill course mathematics practicals
