DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

 A Brief History:

The Department of computer science was the brain child of the computer-savvy Msgr. Fr. Leslie Moras. He was instrumental in establishing it in the year 1990 before he assumed the position of the principal of the college in 1992. He first computerized the office and then launched the courses in 1993 for the undergraduate students with the discipline of B.Sc. (CME, PMC) computer science and BA (SOCP). But in the year 2009 Computer science itself became a major independent discipline as BCA course with 23 students on roll with the majority of 14 foreign students. The department is privileged to have the students of first semester ensemble learning Computer compulsorily. Initially the Department was provided with 40 systems with the facility of Linux & Novell NetWare, later on the migrated to Microsoft windows as computer application was introduced for 2nd year BA, B.Sc., B.com, BBM, BSW courses. This was a purely application oriented compulsory subsidiary paper. In the year 2005, the lab was shifted to bigger premises with 48 systems. In the year 2007, the department was furnished with 5   labs and  LCD projectors of 1500 luminance. At present there are 120 systems to cater to the needs of the learners. In the year 2010, the department introduced a three years advanced diploma networking course and in the year 2012, a one year diploma in web designing. Presently computer science offers open elective courses to 2nd & 3rd year students. In the annals of the department, Fr. Leslie Moras goes in the memory lane as the sole pioneer assisted by a host of talented teachers like Mrs. Asha,V cetra

Achievements:

As per the requirements of the IT industry these days, our students are trained to learn and adapt themselves to the new concepts and innovation of software and technology. This is possible for them as assignments given to them are not from the syllabus but outside the syllabus. As higher education is all about facilitating rather than mere classroom teaching, the department takes care to help the inquisitive students to develop their research skills.

Web Designing Diploma is introduced as an integrated course which helps the students to learn technologies to develop their own dynamic WebPages. This will also increase the employability of students. Networking is made as a part of curriculum for BCA students and is also open to other disciplines like commerce, management, and basic physical sciences. In collaboration with the SAP technologies, the department offers SAP course for all streams of students. 01 level and B1 level courses are also offered at an affordable price to all the students.

As an academic council member, Mr. Manuel from Infosys helps us in understanding the industrial requirements and as per his advice a paper on network security and cyber laws is included for BCA students. An old student of St. Philomena’s college, Mr. Arun Solomon, who works as a Manager IT at L&T, Mysore, was a resource person on VMWare in a seminar organized by the department. His expertise is utilised in networking issues. Mr. Balaji from SDMIMD offered training in SPSS Software for the faculty and an additional one day workshop on the same subject was conducted by the IBM Company to facilitate the faculty. An animation course was offered free to the backward class and minority students.
