About Urdu Department

A brief history

The Department was established with the inception of the college in 1946. Illustrious names have been associated with the department ever since. The faculty has grown immensely under the leadership of Prof.  Khader. M. A., who was the first head of the department.  Prof. Zakia Banu Ahmed took over as the head of the department in 1972 and continued till 2006.

Achievements:

An Exhibition on Urdu Novelists, Play writers, Short story writers, Essayists and Jnanpith Winners in Urdu Literature was arranged on 9th April, 2014. The Exhibits were displayed by the students.

Students of Urdu have been awarded scholarships from the University of Mysore. Mehrabuddin Wakman, a student of the department has co-authored a book on Human Rights in English. He is exceptional in his soft skills, event management and organizational skills.

The department has catered to the needs of the international students particularly the Afghan Nationals who take up Urdu as second language. Hence it has helped the college widen its student profile. The Department has updated the syllabus with a few changes while keeping in mind the current demands and also to ensure that students develop interest in Urdu literature and language.

In the National Seminar held 18th and 19th October 2014 on The Contribution of Non-Muslim Writers to Urdu language and Literature, Prof. Fathimunissa Begum presented a paper on Jagannath Azad Urdu Literary Work.
