About the M.Com Department

A brief history:

The department of post graduate studies in commerce began functioning in july 2012. Prof. Abraham somprakash A. assu,med charge As head of the department. Asst. prof Angela benham and Asst. Prof kumar N.N joined the department in july 2012 and july 2013 respectively as full time faculty members. Both the Assistant Professors have passed M.com and NET in commerce. Asst. Prof Manjunath.S joined the department in july 2012 as a Guest faculty. He has passed MFM and CS and is also a member of the institute of company Secretaries of India.

The academic year began in august 2012 with 34 students admitted to the first semester of the Mcom course. In the year 2013, 29 students joined the crouse. Business taxation and management accounting where introduced as electives. In order to implement meaningfully the CBCS scheme under autonomous college, the department provides for hard core(44 credits), soft core (24 credits) open elective (8 credits), and a compulsory major project work/ dissertation in the fourth semester carrying 8 credits. A curriculum that provides for a wide variety of choice to update M.Com course to catch up with the briskly changing market economy has been put in place. As an interdisciplinary measure and to enhance and enrich the competencies and skills of M.Com students, courses in English grammer and useage, business communication and softskills were introduced with 4 credits each. These courses are being taught by the expert faculty of the English department.

The department offers a course in human resource management for students of M.A. in English and M.Sc. in chemistry. The hard core subjects total up to 44 credits and cover the core commerce areas. All academic positions, planning and designing for the curriculum are carried out by the direct councelling and supervision of the department of studies and research in commerce of the university of mysore.

The work load of teachers that includes mentoring and tutorials is entirely based on the university guidelines (16hrs per week) the faculty focuses on developing courseware and providing exquisite lectures for M.Com students. It may be noted that although many colleges in Mysore offer M.Com course, our academic vigor and competent faculty attract a sizeable number of students.

ACTIVITIES AND ACHEIVEMENTS

Various activities  are included in the curriculam to enhance  curicullam transaction in the classroom and the library. Each academic year begins with a well laid out orientation programme conducted for the new corners to expose them to the functioning year begins with laid out orientation programme conducted for the new corners to expose them to the funxtioning of the college and  also motivate them to participate in various activities.Special lectures by experts are arranged in various topics for which college pays a handsome honorarium. All thease lectures were invariably followed by animated interactions and a question and answer session. Presentation by students using powerpoint and accessing several resourses from library have put our students on par with the students of university of mysore. ICT facilitated classrooms is a unique feature that has paved way for more learner centred activities.

Students also attended seminars conducted by other college,with the support of the management,Industrial visit is an integral part of our caricullam.Students of the fourth semester M.com visited ‘Boruka Extrusions Pvt.Ltd’, Mysore on 4th April 2014.

To maintain the highest vigor and gain credibility of our courses, all evaluation of semester examinations are conmducted by proffesors from the  university of mysore and othaer affiliated and autonoumous college.

The students have enormous opportunities for participation in a variety of college activities besides contributing to the unique st. Philomena’s culture with value education programmed and opportunities to prepare for NET, CAT,GMAT as well as central and state civil service exam.

The board of studies meets at least once annually to revise the curriculum and introduce new courses designed in cooperation with the Commerce Department of the University of Mysore. The Board of Exam which meets at the end of each semester has a strong representation from the Department of Commerce, University of Mysore.

The library has a collection of 183 books and 12 periodicals in commerce and management to cover the curriculum under the semester scheme. Access to internet that includes inflibnet (E-Resource) is also available. Mentoring programme that has been initiated has helped several students to catch up with the academic content to keep up with the pressure created by the semester scheme. Special emphasis has been laid on the development of communication skills in English.
